Double the eggs, meat productionto build healthy, developed nation by 2021: Matia to poultry industry
Farms and Farmer24.com: Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury MP urged the local poultry industries to double the production of eggs and meats to build a healthy and developed nation by 2021. She called the local researchers, scientist, and poultry farmers to work together to double the production of the eggs and meats. Begum Matia was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the 3-day “10th International Poultry Show and Seminar”at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB) in the capital on Thursday. The Show and Seminar is being organized by the World Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB). Presided over by the WPSA-BB President MrShamsulArefin Khaled, Mr Narayan Chandra Chanda MP was present as the Special Guest, while Director General of the Department of Livestock (DoLS) DrAinulHuquewas present as the Guest of Honour.
Agriculture minister Matia also the Prime Minister is very positive on Bangladesh’s poultry sector. “For her special attention, the Bangladesh’s poultry farmer and businessmen have recouped the losses from the devastating avian influenza attacked in 2007-08 period.” The minister requested the scientists, researchers and poultry industry people to work on upgrading the production and supply of the local varieties of chicken along with the poultry birds, chicks and eggs. “There is huge demand of the local varieties of hens and roosters in the country. But those production is still very low. If we can develop the local verities of the roosters, we can expand our protein intake,” she said. Ms. Matia assured the businessmen, researchers and scientists of government’s all out support to this effect.
Mr Narayan Chandra Chanda MP said the government, big and small poultry farmers needs a collaboration to upgrade production of eggs and meat and their supply in the market.
DG of the DoLSDrAinulHuque said: “The poultry industry is facing some challenges over the years. So, the industry needs some incentives especially after and disaster like avian influenza attack.” He also requested the government authorities to waive taxes on their imports of raw materials and other allied products.
Dr MA Sattar Mandal said the meats and eggs are accounts for 10.31 per cent of the total food supply in the country (HIES 2010). So, this sector needs some policy and other possible support to grow at faster rate.
Mr. Mandal requested the government to rationalize the tax structure for the poultry industry for their further up gradation.
He urged the authorities concerned to train and provide credit support to the small traders and farmers.
WPSA-BB President MrShamsulArefin Khaled said the poultry industry is supplying a significant amounts of animal protein across the country. “This industry wants to increase the current 51 eggs consumption per capita to 85 annually and the meat intake from current 4.2kg to 7.5kg by 2021.”
He said the poultry sector is related with at least seven goals out of 17 sustainable development goals (SDG). So, he requested the government to waive taxes on the import of raw materials and other relevant products,and Advance Income Tax (AIT) to boost the local production.
WPSA-BB General Secretary MrSirajul Islam said we have changed the country’s malnutrition scenario in last four decades. “Now we want to change the overall scenario of Bangladesh in the next four decades.” Former WPSA-BB President and Convenor of the 10th International Poultry Show and Seminar MrMashiur Rahman requested the government to announce the poultry sector as the agro-based industry. He also urged to establish a separate department for the poultry sector. The WPSA-BB Thursday handed over “ParagoanAwarded”to Ms Amrita Pandit and “Ehsanul Karim Award”MrBipul Chandra Royfor their roles in the local poultry industry research. Besides, the organizer also awarded life-time achievement to late Humayan Rashid Chowdhury for his pioneer role in the Bangladesh’s poultry industry.
